Education Policy
Science and mathematics are important for an individual's success in life, and a high-quality science and mathematics education is central to sustaining a thriving economy. Our education policy work is therefore geared to providing strategic and independent advice to government, its agencies and other opinion-formers to improve science and mathematics education in UK schools and colleges.
We are particularly concerned with ensuring a logical, clear and transparent curriculum and qualifications framework that caters for all backgrounds and abilities, and encourages as many young people as possible to study science and mathematics post-16. We also recognise that teachers play a crucial role in young people’s development, and that they should be a central consideration in any curriculum review. We want to ensure that there are enough teachers able to bring these subjects alive in the classroom and that their needs are met in terms of a curriculum that encourages imaginative approaches to teaching and learning, appropriate assessment and opportunities for continuing professional development.
We work closely with a wide range of stakeholders in the science and mathematics communities in pursuing these goals. The Society has also helped to establish the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), enabling the maths community to broaden and strengthen the advice given to the government. In addition, the Society is one of the co-founders of SCORE (Science Community Representing Education), a partnership between six organisations working together to inform science education policy.
