PolicyLab
The Royal Society’s PolicyLabs bring together policymakers and scientists to discuss hot topics in science policy. Following a number of guest speakers the floor opens for a lively discussion. Each monthly event is followed by an informal drinks reception where attendees are invited to continue the debate.
Recent PolicyLab Events Include:
The DNA Debate
DNA fingerprinting has revolutionised the way we solve crime and Britain now has the most extensive DNA database of its kind. But many individuals listed are innocent of any crime and many of them are under 18. The database continues to provoke ethical and civil liberties concerns, which are at the forefront of current
policy debates.
To mark the 25th anniversary of DNA fingerprinting, Sir Alec Jeffries joined us at PolicyLab to reflect on the technique he pioneered and what we might expect from DNA identification in the future. Shami Chakrabarti , the Director of Liberty, joined in the discussion, outlining the main concerns over the UK National DNA Database, and setting out proposals for changes to UK policy on DNA retention.
The Scientific Life
What does it mean to be a scientist in the 21st century? Are scientists still driven by curiosity and a desire to make the world a better place? How different is university science from corporate science? What does this mean for how we support and regulate scientific research?
These questions launched a fruitful discussion on contemporary science. Our speakers included historian and sociologist of science at Harvard University, Professor Steven Shapin, neuroscientist Mark Lythgoe, and James Wilsdon, Director of the Royal Society Science Policy Centre.
