As part of its commitment to bring together the best of science and education for the future of society, the Society is continuing to develop its work with schools, teachers and school children during its anniversary.

    Associate Schools Scheme

For the 2010 celebrations, the Society has established an Associate Schools scheme, providing schools with unprecedented access to the resources and activities of the Royal Society. The Associate Schools Scheme will support the curriculum needs of teachers and highlight the work and history of the society.

This pilot phase of the programme will recruit primary and secondary schools from across London to take part during the Society’s anniversary year.

    Associate Schools will benefit from:

    • assisted application to the Royal Society Partnership Grants scheme
    • access to the Royal Society’s unique collection of scientific books and manuscripts
    • preferential booking for events and lectures
    • preferential booking for Summer Science Exhibition and special associated events
    • Education newsletter
    • Weekly digest of educational news (i.e. Education in the News).

    Partnership Grants Scheme

The Society’s successful and long-running Partnership Grants Scheme is expanding in 2010, giving more UK students the opportunity to experience science first hand in 2010.

Open to schools for all ages, from primary level through sixth form, the grants enable students to carry out their own research project in partnership with a practising university or industry-based scientist or engineer.

    International Expedition Prize

In March the International Expedition Prize was awarded to Sam Bedford and Hannah Stuart for their outstanding science projects at the Big Bang: the UK Young Scientists and Engineers fair. Sam and Hannah will be joining a Royal Society expedition to the Danum Rainforest in Malaysian Borneo during 2010, where they will be working with the South East Asia Rainforest Research Programme (SEARRP).

    Other 2010 education activities

Many of the anniversary events run by our partners around the country - and of course the Festival of Science - will also have a strong educational component and many will offer curriculum materials to accompany a visit.
