The Royal Society normally charges a photographic fee for copies of its images for personal, academic use or as a gift.

From Beccaria, Experimenta, atque observationes, quibus electricitas... 1769, image opposite p 66The Royal Society holds copyright or has the right to charge reproduction fees on a large part of its collection and a charge may be made depending on the use of the picture in question.

There are items, however, where copyright lies outside the Society and permission to reproduce has to be obtained by the enquirer, which on a broad basis occurs:

    • When a photographer or artist is still alive and has not assigned copyright to the Society.
    • When the date of the photograph is still within 70 years of the photographer or artist's death and copyright was not assigned to the Society.

For further information or help with this, please contact the Picture Library.
