Capacity building in Africa

The aim of the Society’s capacity building work is to create a range of novel support mechanisms to successfully assist in building sustainable research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa. 

Our programme provide support at an individual, institutional and national level.  These programmes seek to both develop the research base, acknowledge high-quality science in sub-Saharan African and provide support and advice at a national level to ensure  longer term sustainability. The key objectives of our capacity build programme are to:

• recognise promising early-career scientists in Africa
• contribute to the development of African scientific academies
• promote collaborative research projects between the UK and African countries

• Leverhulme-Royal Society Africa Award: For scientists who want to develop a collaborative research project between the UK and research institutions in either Ghana or Tanzania.
• Royal Society-DFID Africa Capacity Building Initiative: For scientists who want to develop collaborative research consortia between scientists in sub-Saharan Africa and a research institution in the UK.
• Royal Society Pfizer Award: For scientists working in the biological sciences to promote capacity-building in Africa.
• Royal Society Pfizer African Academies Programme: Strengthens national science academies in Ghana, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
• Developing world access to Royal Society online journals: We are partners in a number of international schemes to make scientific journal articles available immediately and free of charge to the world's poorest nations.
