Inspire interest in the joy, wonder and excitement of scientific discovery

We will generate widespread interest in science, raising awareness of how it touches everyday life and how society can play a vital role in its progress. Science is an integral part of our culture. An understanding of science can profoundly alter our appreciation of ourselves and of the world we live in. Science permeates our lives but is sometimes seen as remote from our daily experience. The challenge is to inspire the public in the joy, wonder and excitement of science.

    We will:

    • Celebrate and excite interest in science through our public and prize lectures, talks and discussion meetings, exhibitions and special projects, as well as creative and innovative use of new media.
    • Work more productively with the creative and artistic industries to raise the profile of science, its people, processes and principles, in the UK’s cultural output.
    • Unlock the Royal Society library and historical archives through digitisation, conservation and preservation of our outstanding collection of scientific archival materials.
    • Establish a centre for the History of Science, based on our unique collections, to promote scholarly research and encourage public engagement with science.
    • Expand the Summer Science Exhibitions where scientists present their cutting edge research to the public.
    • Exploit the internet and new media, particularly our web and podcasts, to communicate science and reach and interact with wider audiences in the UK and globally.
