The under-representation of women in science in the United Kingdom remains a major problem. To tackle this problem, the Royal Society launched its Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship Scheme in 1994, named after one of the Society's first female Fellows and a Nobel laureate. The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship scheme offers a recognised first step into an independent research career for excellent, primarily female scientists and engineers for whom career flexibility is essential.
BP has been supporting two Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships since 2003. To read more about how such support has made a difference to the research career of female scientists, read the article about Royal Society BP Dorothy Hodgkin Fellows in BP Magazine, Issue 2, p. 44
