Supporting excellent individuals is at the core of our work and more than 75% of our annual operating budget is devoted to grants and fellowship schemes. We need to strengthen support for outstanding scientists to create and harness new knowledge, improve quality of life and increase prosperity.
We will support the science base while leveraging our scientific network to stimulate innovation for early stage research with commercial potential through a venture philanthropy approach. We will expand our research fellowships in targeted areas including our successful Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships for women in science, Industry Fellowships, international fellowships and research around key themes.

Semali Perera of the University of Bath is carrying out research on novel materials with potential in a number of applications – including pollution control. Her research is based on nano-porous fibres that can separate volatile hydrocarbons and other gases, allowing them to be removed and even recycled back to the process.
Dr Perera’s work offers answers to pressing environmental problems. Her work on energy efficient systems to trap the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants from smokestacks has received the prestigious Brian Mercer Award for Innovation from the Royal Society and will be used to make pollution abatement technology commercially viable.
