• Local Heroes – Sharing the Experience

Kendal Museum: Artist Marianne Birkby with Hunter Hall School, Cumbria, working on the ‘Stuff of Planets’ project.

As part of the Royal Society’s 350th anniversary celebrations in 2010, over 50 museums, galleries, libraries and heritage sites across the UK brought the work of their local scientific hero to life through a range of imaginative and engaging activities for schools and public audiences.

The Local Heroes programme has now come to an end, but in order to share the learning from these activities the Royal Society is launching a series of one day workshops.

The workshops are open for anyone who wishes to develop science activities within their programme for schools. It is particularly aimed at smaller organisations that traditionally do not have a science focus, such as museums, galleries and libraries.

The workshop will help support you in developing activities for schools based on your collections, and provide advice on what schools look for when booking science activities, and where you may be able to find additional funding. There will also be a mentoring scheme available following the workshop so that you can continue to discuss your ideas with science communication professionals.

The workshops are free of charge and will take place at five different venues:

Tuesday 22 November, SS Great Britain, Bristol

    Thursday 24 November, Thinktank, Birmingham

Tuesday 29 November, Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester - THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL

Tuesday 6 December, National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

Friday 20 January, The Science Museum, London - NEW DATE

Workshops will start either at 10am or 10.30am and will finish no later than 5pm.

Each workshop will include a presentation from the host venue about working with schools, case studies presented by Local Hero organisations and practical activities to help you find the science in your collections. A full programme will be available closer to the time.

If you would like to register to attend one of these workshops, then please complete the registration form. Places are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. You will receive confirmation of your booking within two weeks. Full joining instructions will be sent closer to the time.

There is a support fund available for organisations that may find it difficult to fund their staff to attend a workshop. This limited fund offers £50 to those who can demonstrate they are in need of additional financial support. If you wish to apply for support then please complete the final page of the registration form. You will need to let us know:

    • Number of full time paid staff within your organisation
    • Annual footfall of visitors
    • Registered charity number
    • Short statement (no longer than 300 words) about why you would be unable to attend this workshop without this funding.

Please note that the deadline for support fund applications is now closed.

Funding is limited and we cannot guarantee that everyone who applies for funding will receive it. Payment goes to your organisation after you have attended the workshop.

Please contact education@royalsociety.org if you have any questions.
