Summer Science Exhibition
Do you want to promote your research and institution to a wide audience? Can you turn your research into a fun, interactive exhibit? The Summer Science Exhibition is the Society's most prestigious event of the year. The exhibition attracts a great deal of media interest and is a fantastic opportunity for you to showcase your research to the public, post-16 and potential university students, scientists, policy makers, MPs, captains of industry, representatives from funding bodies and research councils, teachers and the wider scientific community. It's a chance to really put your institution in the scientific spotlight. The call for proposals for the 2009 Exhibition is now closed. The call for proposals for the 2010 Summer Science Exhibition will be open in June 2009. The Royal Society 2009 Summer Science Exhibition will take place from Tuesday 30 June - Saturday 4 July 2009 at the Royal Society in London. Typically, over 4000 visitors attend the exhibition each year. Many more visit the exhibition online at our website summerscience.org.uk. In 2008 there were over 14,000 visitors to the exhibition web pages. The Royal Society's selection Committee, chaired by Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE FRS selects around 20-25 teams for the exhibition to share the excitement of their research with a wider audience. The selection process is very competitive, with typically one exhibit accepted per five proposals entered. The Exhibition makes a significant contribution to the Society's work in encouraging public engagement with science and promoting science education. The large number of post-16 students attending the Exhibition also gives exhibitors a unique opportunity to influence and enthuse potential university students about careers in science. The Royal Society science communication section provides support at each step of the way for exhibitors, beginning with an initial planning day with advice on finding funding, building your exhibit, interactivity and much more. On this day you get to meet previous exhibitors and gain helpful tips for the event. We also provide a free Royal Society exhibition communication skills course to help prepare your team. Our press office will work alongside your institution to gain maximum exposure for your research and the exhibition. You will find the links on the left hand side useful to assist you in making your decision to submit a proposal. If you would like to discuss your ideas before committing yourself to writing a proposal you are more than welcome to have an informal chat with Emma Skelton, Events Officer, on 020 7451 2244 or exhibition@royalsociety.org
