Semiconductor nanocrystals: building blocks for high-performance PV & photonics

"As concern about global warming grows, scientists are searching for environmentally friendly ways to meet our energy demands. Solar power is clean and sustainable, but the limited range of materials suitable for harnessing it has so far prevented its full exploitation so that, despite continuing efforts, it is not yet an efficient fuel source.

My research looks at ways to improve the efficiency with which solar energy is converted into electrical current by using tiny, man-made crystals of specific materials. These ‘nanocrystals’ have in fact the potential to convert a larger portion of the sun’s energy into electrical current compared to conventional materials presently used in solar cells.

The outcome of my research could help the UK develop new, sustainable technologies that enhance the cleanliness and efficiency of energy production.  Non-polluting energy sources also reduce damage to crops and improve community health, as well as making our industry less reliable on overseas energy supplies. This will contribute to the Government's commitment to meet the greenhouse gas emission targets."
