Inside Science - Anniversary Issue, Autumn 2009
This is a very special issue of Inside Science, marking the beginning of the Society’s celebrations for its 350th anniversary year.
The magazine has a new look and is wholly devoted to events and activities that recognise the significance of this remarkable year in the life of the Society. It organises our activities under the Society’s five strategic priorities, providing us with the opportunity to demonstrate how the work of the Royal Society contributes to shaping the future of science in the UK and beyond.
In this anniversary issue we look at:
- The variety of the anniversary programme, from our discussion meetings on cutting-edge science, to a series of publications including anniversary editions of our learned journals, as well as our public events in partnership with regional museums and this summer's Festival of Science at Southbank Centre.
- The future – with the establishment of the Society’s Science Policy Centre to offer expert, independent advice on all aspects of public policy with a scientific dimension.
- A new venture for the Society – the Kavli Royal Society International Centre– a magnificent new residential facility for scientists which will begin its programme of meetings over the summer of our anniversary year.
- Our plans to celebrate 350 years of fascinating history by creating the Centre for the History of Science. During 2010 we will renovate the physical premises of the Society’s Library and the storage facilities for our priceless archives. We will also open access to all by putting more of our heritage material online.
- Our continued investment in some of the country’s leading researchers through our grants schemes and by the appointment of six new Research Professors.
- Support for the Royal Society – a third of the Fellowship has joined us in support of the 350th Anniversary Campaign, helping to fund the Society’s most important work.
