Professor of Neuroimmunology, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine and Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford

Angela Vincent is distinguished for identifying and demonstrating novel pathogenic mechanisms of autoantibodies to ion channels and other membrane proteins in adult and foetal human neurological disorders, discoveries that have enhanced diagnosis and treatment. Targets include a muscle specific receptor tyrosine kinase in myasthenia, and voltage-gated neuronal potassium channels in nerve hyperexcitability and limbic encephalitis. She showed that human maternal antibodies that selectively inhibit the foetal form of the acetylcholine receptor cause a severe developmental disorder, that their maternal transfer to the mouse foetus causes similar musculoskeletal abnormalities, and that other maternal neuronal antibodies may contribute to cognitive neurodevelopmental disorders.
