This study provided an overview of the global scientific landscape in 2011. The aims were to map and analyse where, why and by whom science is being carried out around the world and to understand how this is changing and what the implications of these developments are for global decision makers in science, business, NGOs and government.

The report notes the growth of scientific activity across the world, and the increasingly interactive nature of research. Network maps (using data and analysis from our project partners, Elsevier), demonstrate the growing scale and importance of research collaboration, and case studies explore the role of networks and partnerships in addressing global challenges. Readers can also access some of the report data themselves, using this motion graph. 

The final report was published in March 2011 at a high level conference at the Royal Society.
