This is one of the Royal Society's responses to the Government's GM Science Review. We have also responded on the following issues:

    • Genetically modified plants and the environment
    • Genetically modified plants for food use and human health
    • Genetically modified plants and world agriculture
    • The regulatory process and human health
    • The regulatory process and environmental issues

In May 2002, the Government announced that it was sponsoring a national debate on the genetic modification of plants ahead of a decision about the commercialisation of GM crops being evaluated in farm trials. The debate has three strands: a public debate, a review of the scientific issues and a study by the Strategy Unit into the overall costs and benefits of GM crops.
