10 May 2012Disasters impose huge social and economic costs on societies. These costs can be reduced by reducing exposure and adopting new strategies that include: risk surveillance and capacity building, improvement of public health systems, application of advanced information technology systems, improving standards for infrastructure and through the integration of resilience capacity into development assistance programmes.
