European Commission: Use of animals in research

01 August 2006

The Royal Society has responded to the European Commission's consultation on the revision of Directive 86/609/EEC on the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes. The consultation asked questions relating to the scope of the Directive, the authorisation and ethical review of projects, housing and care standards, transparency and access to information, non-human primates, inspections of facilities and procedures, education and training, avoiding duplication of experiments using animals, the use of CO2 for euthanasia and statistical reporting.

Following the consultation, the revised Directive is expected to be published by the Commission in early 2007.
