The Royal Society response to Lord Stern's review

28 July 2016

In response to the publication today of Lord Stern’s independent review of the process for assessing university research and allocating public funding, Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the Royal Society said:

“We are pleased that Lord Stern’s review seeks to put greater emphasis on a body of work from a unit or institution rather than on individuals.  This would better reflect the fact that funding is allocated to institutions.  It is also good news that the review highlights the need to recognise the vital relationship between research and teaching and the importance of interdisciplinary research.  The review offers a clear way forward that will allow the Research Excellence Framework to continue to deliver funding to the best research.  We look forward to seeing how it is implemented to achieve that goal ”
