Anthony was director of the Nuffield Foundation from 1995 to 2012. With a background in physics teaching he led the Foundation’s work in science and mathematics education, which included large-scale curriculum projects as well as many influential research projects. Since retiring from the Foundation, he has continued his involvement with mathematics education, with a particular interest in the issue of widening participation in mathematics post-GCSE. He was a member of the Core Maths Support Group and a co-author of the ’Mathematical Transitions’ report.
He is Director of the Salters’ Institute, the lead charity of the Salters’ Company (a City of London livery company) and a Visiting Professor in the department of Education at King’s College, London. He is trustee and Vice Chair of the Bell Foundation (a new foundation with a focus on English as an Additional Language); a trustee of the Pensions Policy Institute; and a governor of City and Islington College, a large FE college in Central London and a member of the board of the Association of Charitable Foundations. He was awarded the CBE in 2013, for services to education.
