Bin Han graduated from Anhui Normal University in China in 1985, and did his Ph.D study in the Sainsbury Laboratory/JIC in UK during 1989-1992. He has worked in the National Center for Gene Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1999. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013, and won twice of the National Natural Science Awards.
Bin Han has made numerous, distinguished contributions to the field of rice genomics and genetics. He developed genomic approaches for tapping diverse rice resources and accessing genome-scale sequence variation in cultivated and wild rice by re-sequencing. He has successfully carried out genome-wide association study on agronomic traits in rice, and have also uncovered the origin of the Asian domesticated rice, and genetic basis of rice heterosis. He is a worldwide leader in rice genomics and genetics that have contributed significantly to understanding of quantitative traits, rice domestication and the genetic basis of heterosis. His ground-breaking work in rice has impact for generations to come, and yielding enormous insights into basic plant biology.
