Clare Matterson is Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society. She was previously Executive Director of Engagement at the Natural History Museum, responsible for all public-facing museum and commercial activities, communications and international partnerships.


Clare was Interim Chief Executive Officer at EAT, a foundation for transforming the global food system to provide healthy and sustainable food that is accessible and affordable to all. She also spent 17 years with the Wellcome Trust as Director of Strategy and Director of Culture and Society, where she led many of Wellcome's transformative initiatives, including being one of the founders of Wellcome Collection, leading Wellcome's Our Planet Our Health initiative and establishing the UK's National STEM Learning Centre.


Clare has sat on a variety of Boards and is currently a Council member for the UK's Natural Environment Research Council.

 

Clare received a Fellowship from the British Science Association for outstanding contributions to public engagement and was named by GQ Magazine as one of the UK's top 100 influential women. In 2017, she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of York and was awarded the CBE for services to public engagement.
