Professor Lizzy Fisher FMedSci FRS

Elizabeth Fisher has used mouse molecular genetics to develop novel technical strategies, from phenotyping protocols to genome engineering, to enhance mechanistic studies of models of neurological diseases including those arising from aneuploidy, so revealing fundamental insights into pathological processes.

After an undergraduate degree in Oxford, she gained a PhD in mouse molecular genetics at Imperial College London/MRC Harwell (supervisors: Steve Brown, FRS; Mary Lyon, FRS). She went on to a postdoctoral fellowship with David Page at the Whitehead Institute, MIT, identifying a novel gene involved in the aneuploidy, Turner syndrome.  In 1990 she returned to Imperial on a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, developing novel mouse models to research aneuploidy and neurodegenerative disease.  In 2001 she moved to the Institute of Neurology at University College London to take up the role of Professor of Neurogenetics, to capitalise on the use of her mouse models within a neuroscience and translational environment.
