Professor Patrick Ping Leung Tam FRS

Deputy Director and Senior Principal Research Fellow, Children’s Medical Research Institute and Professor, Discipline of Medicine, Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney

Patrick Tam is cited for his research into cell fate and cell lineage in mammalian development. He also proved experimentally that mammalian germ cells arise by induction rather than segregation of germ plasm as in other species and showed that the mammalian organizer, which induces the body axis, varies in composition and inductive ability over time. These studies, and his many other contributions, have been fundamentally important for understanding early embryonic development and origins of congenital malformations.
