Research summary

My research focuses on using the past record of climate change to learn about climate system properties and predict future climate change. I focus on trying to disentangle the causes of observed climate change, specifically considering variability generated within the climate system against changes caused by influences outside climate. Examples for the latter include variations in solar radiation, volcanic eruptions or changes in the composition of the atmosphere. I am particularly interested in attributing causes to observed changes in temperature, rainfall and the frequency and intensity of extremes in temperature and rainfall. My group also does some climate modelling, using state-of-the art climate models to simulate climate change over the past millennium and over the anthropocene.
