Research summary

Dr Gareth Conduit aims to develop a framework that will allow bespoke materials to be designed by computer. Through the stone, bronze, and iron ages the discovery of new materials has defined human history. The coming of each age was sparked by the chance discovery of a new material. Despite the turnover for UK industries that rely on advanced materials reaching £170bn in 2012, even today the only way to develop new materials is through time-consuming and expensive experimentally driven trial and improvement.

During his Royal Society University Research Fellowship, Dr Conduit will leverage the computational approaches developed over the previous two decades and merge them into a holistic materials design tool. To drive real-world applications, Dr Conduit has already developed collaborations with Rolls Royce plc and Samsung Electronics. The research program should not only lead to the development of advanced commercial materials, but moreover contribute towards the long-term goal of a generic approach to materials design.
