Reed is recognised as a pioneer and founder of Silicon Photonics, a field that has revolutionised communications in data centres. His Group is 70 strong, have provided numerous world leading results, and currently hold two data-rate world records for Silicon modulators/transmitters. They are also at the forefront of emerging applications such as LiDAR for imaging, mid-IR Silicon Photonics for healthcare and environmental sensing, and programmable photonic circuits. Reed also founded the UK Silicon Photonics foundry CORNERSTONE and LiDAR company Pointcloud.
He has contributed to more than 680 publications, including 197 invited/keynote/plenary talks, two books (including the first Silicon Photonics textbook), and 23 patent families. He was the recipient of the IET Crompton Medal for Achievement in Energy (2013), a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award (2014), an industry PIC award for his contribution Silicon Photonics (2019), the “Sir Frank Whittle Medal” (Royal Academy of Engineering, 2023), and the SPIE Gold Medal (2023). He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Optica, The IET, The European Optical Society, SPIE, and now the Royal Society.
