Research summary

Pluripotent stem cells possess the remarkable ability to replenish new copies of themselves through cell division, and to give rise to daughter cells that can develop into all the different specialized cell types of the body. They are the focus of much recent scientific research because of their potential to be employed in stem cell medicines such as for Parkinson's disease. Induced pluripotent stem cells are particularly interesting as they can be generated from adult cells by reprogramming the m to a pluripotent state simply by the addition of certain proteins, meaning that they can be produced from patient blood samples. However, such treatments are still at early stages since the unique factors and pathways that control stemness are poorly understood. We recently discovered KAP1 (kr ppel-associated box domain-(KRAB)-associated protein 1) and KRAB-containing zinc finger proteins to lie at the heart of pluripotency because these factors bind to and repress sites in the genome derived from ancient viruses,
