Professor Jitendra Malik FRS

Jitendra Malik is Professor of EECS at UC Berkeley and a pre-eminent leader in computer vision. His work is frequently inspired from psychology and neuroscience, contributing to the computational modeling of biological vision.

Jitendra has framed the central problems of computer vision as the 3R’s, recognition, reconstruction and re-organization, emphasizing their close coupling, and has made fundamental contributions to each.  Several well-known concepts arose in this research, such as anisotropic diffusion, normalized cuts, high dynamic range imaging, and R-CNN. His recent work in robotics has developed learning based approaches to navigation and legged locomotion.

Jitendra is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences,  National Academy of Engineering and Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, IJCAI Award for Research Excellence in AI, and the IEEE’s Computer Pioneer Award for “leading role in developing Computer Vision into a thriving discipline through pioneering research, leadership, and mentorship”.
