Research summary

For many-particle systems near equilibrium, efficient and computable descriptions are available, building on fundamental results by Gibbs, Boltzmann, Einstein, Onsager and others. For systems out of equilibrium (not close-to-equilibrium, with ‘life’ as most striking example), our understanding is very incomplete, and the rich new class of phenomena occurring there poses a major scientific challenge. How can we describe these phenomena, which are often interesting, or technologically relevant? This is what we try to understand using a combination of methods from mathematics and physics.
