Professor Burland CBE FREng FRS

Professor Burland is a member of the Steering Group for the project Leading the way: Increasing diversity in the scientific workforce

Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering, Imperial College London

I have always had an interest in encouraging young people to consider engineering as a chosen profession irrespective of colour, creed, gender or disability. I spend a lot of time in schools describing the excitement and challenge of engineering and the way the scientific method underpins and enables creative and rewarding work.

I have taken part in a number of television programmes aimed at conveying the challenges of engineering. A recent one was with Dick Strawbridge on Geronimo, sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering, in which teams of all ages competed with each other in tackling various engineering challenges.
