Research summary

Complex carbohydrates are involved in a wide range of biological processes. Despite their importance, lack of access to pure samples for screening has hampered progress in glycobiology and glycomedicine. The stereoselective synthesis of glycosides is one of the biggest challenges in carbohydrate chemistry. Most methods for stereo-control rely on the careful choice of protecting groups, which require the introduction of specific functional groups on the glycosyl donor to direct the nucleophilic attack. However, these methods are often troublesome, impractical and not suitable to every glycoside. The proposed project aims to develop general and catalytic methods to control the glycosylation outcome.
