Malcolm Sambridge is Emeritus Professor in Seismology and Mathematical Geophysics at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University. He is internationally recognised as a world authority on geophysical inverse problems, and has repeatedly introduced new mathematical methods that have transformed how Earth scientists extract information from complex data.
His contributions span earthquake location, seismic tomography, Bayesian inference, and computational simulation. He developed the landmark Neighbourhood Algorithm for direct search in high-dimensional parameter spaces, introduced trans-dimensional and trans-conceptual inference to the geosciences, and most recently pioneered the application of Optimal Transport theory to seismic waveform inversion. His open-source software has been used in hundreds of institutions worldwide.
Sambridge's honours include the Price Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (2009), Fellowship of the American Geophysical Union (2010), Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science (2015), the AGU Gutenberg Lecture (2020), and the EGU Beno Gutenberg Medal (2021).
