Professor Pierre Friedlingstein FRS

Pierre Friedlingstein is a climate scientist specialised in understanding the complex interactions between climate change and the global carbon cycle. His seminal work on the quantification of the climate-carbon cycle feedbacks led to the worldwide recognition that the carbon cycle is a fully interactive component of the climate system.

Pierre leads international scientific activities to improve knowledge in global carbon cycle and climate change such as the Coupled Climate Carbon Cycle Models Intercomparison (C4MIP) and, more recently, the Global Carbon Budget annual assessments. He is member of the Joint Science Committee of the World Climate Research Programme and was author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Pierre holds a Chair in Mathematical Modelling of the Climate System at the University of Exeter and is also Research Director at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France. He was Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holder, recipient of the Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal of the European Geosciences Union, and of the Alexander von Humbold Research award.
