Professor Roberto Mayor FMedSci FRS

Roberto Mayor is a developmental biologist renowned for his pioneering research on cell migration during embryonic development. After completing his doctoral studies in Chile, he undertook postdoctoral research in London before joining the University College London in the early 2000s, where he is now Professor of Developmental and Cellular Neurobiology. His work has uncovered key signalling pathways and mechanical forces that guide cells to their correct positions in the embryo, with broad implications for understanding cancer progression and advancing tissue engineering.

His contributions have been widely recognised through numerous honours, including his appointment as an International Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, election as a member of EMBO, Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and membership in the Latin American Academy of Sciences. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Cells & Development.

In addition to his research, Mayor is a committed educator and mentor. He has trained many PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to successful scientific careers, and he is actively involved in international teaching initiatives.
