Professor Sanwen Huang ForMemRS

Sanwen Huang obtained his BSc and MSc in China Agricultural University and PhD in Wageningen University, the Netherlands, and is currently the President of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences and Professor at the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

He has made seminal contributions to plant genomics and genome-based crop breeding. His team developed the first generation of highly homozygous inbred lines and hybrid potatoes by genome design and therefore reinvented the crop from a clonally propagated tetraploid species into a seed-propagated diploid one, which transforms potato breeding from a slow, non-accumulative mode into a fast-iterative one and thus provides a new paradigm for the genetic improvement of clonal crops.

He was elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023. His honors include the State Natural Science Award of China (2018), Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (Hong Kong, 2018), 2018, and the TWAS Award in Agriculture, Nutrition & Food Systems Sciences (2024).
