Summary: Prof Adhikari's main research areas are (a) Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) in computational mechanics and (b) Inverse problems for linear and non-linear structural dynamics. In the first topic, various methods (eg, random matrix theory, random eigenvalue problems, asymptomatic integral method, stochastic finite element method, Gaussian emulators) are being developed to quantify uncertainty in the response of complex engineering systems. A damage in a healthy structure often introduce non-linearity. In the second topic, various filtering methods (eg, particle Kalman filter, ensemble Kalman filter, Extended Kalman Filter, Latin Hypercube Sampling) are investigated to jointly obtain the state and non-linear parameters of a complex system.
