Better prediction of climatic variability for rain-fed agriculture and development of sustainable marine resource utilisation is critical for developing countries bordering the Indian Ocean. This inter-disciplinary meeting will discuss: new information on geological structure, history and palaeo-oceanography of the western Indian Ocean, coupled ocean - atmosphere climatologies, and interactions between physical oceanography, ocean productivity and regional fisheries.
