Biodiversity offsetting has become an increasingly popular concept in policymaking, representing an attractive solution for ensuring continued development and economic growth, whilst also supporting our ecosystems.
Implementation of this approach however, remains a contentious topic. Can such initiatives be effectively realised without losing irreplaceable ecosystems? Against what measures will the environmental benefits be assessed?
This PolicyLab will bring together policymakers, academics, environmental conservationists and development interests to address questions across both development and conservation.
A guest blog contribution from EJ Milner-Gulland, Professor in Conservation Science at Imperial College, London, reviews briefly how biodiversity offsetting could work in England. EJ’s research examines the dynamics of ecological and social systems working at the interface between ecology and human behavior. Her recent publication highlights include a comprehensive review of biodiversity offsetting in theory and practice. Through her collaborative projects, she has established international links on every inhabited continent.
The event is chaired by Charles Godfray FRS from the University of Oxford.

This event is free to attend and open to all. No tickets are required. Doors open at 18:00 and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
