This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2026.

Discover the latest science and technology that is paving the way for more sustainable chemistry, from machine learning to harnessing light and – believe it or not – the power of berries. Join BBC radio presenter, Marnie Chesteron in conversation with scientists pushing the boundaries in this field.

Speakers include:

  • Dr Joe Heeley – Research fellow developing machine learning and artificial intelligence tools that can help chemists find greener ways to make molecules at the University of Nottingham
  • Professor Marina Freitag – Chair of Energy and Royal Society University Research Fellow at Newcastle University, building the chemistry that powers sustainable AI
  • Marnie Chesteron (Chair) – Radio producer and presenter of Inside Science on BBC Radio 4 and Unexpected Elements on the BBC World Service

Attending the event

This event will be held in Theatre 2 at the Royal Society on Friday 3 July 2026, 2pm – 2.40pm.

  • Free to attend as part of Summer Science Exhibition on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to seat availability. We recommend that visitors arrive 10-15 minutes before the session
  • Eventbrite tickets for Summer Science Exhibition are recommended, with only a limited number of walk-up tickets released on the day
  • Suitable for students aged 14+
  • This talk will take place in person
