This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2026.

When you think about the Arctic and Antarctic regions, you’ll likely think of one thing – ice! But scientific research extends beyond and below frozen water. In this discussion you'll hear from researchers studying the carbon released from thawing permafrost in Alaska and the hidden geology beneath the Antarctic ice sheet.

Speakers include:

  • Dr Evelyn Keaveney – Arctic lake scientist and member of the UK Young Academy based at Queen’s University Belfast
  • Dr Guy Paxman – Polar geophysicist and Royal Society University Research Fellow based at Durham University
  • Dr Mark Richards (Chair) – Atmospheric physicist and Head of physics outreach at Imperial College London
