What to expect at this year’s Summer Science exhibition

Do you know what makes chocolate taste unique, or how llamas are helping us fight viruses?

Join us at the Summer Science Exhibition to explore the science behind these questions and more.

The Royal Society’s annual Summer Science Exhibition (6 - 10 July 2022) returns to central London this summer, offering a free interactive experience for anyone curious about the latest advances in science and technology. Get hands-on with berry-powered solar cells, find out how you could join the hunt for unknown species in your back garden, or meet the scientists designing remote-healing technology.

Join us at the weekend to explore our drop-in workshops, or visit during the week to meet the budding scientists at our Young Researcher Zone, where students from the Partnership Grants scheme will be exhibiting their research. Families can explore the exhibition at their own pace during the weekend with workshops for all ages and interests, as well as a dedicated children’s area, child-friendly menu, and buggy parking available.

If you are unable to come to London for the event, we will have curated digital content available on demand, including livestream demonstrations and interviews so you can still experience the buzz of the exhibition floor.

Sign up to our public newsletter to be the first to know the latest news about the exhibition.

History of the Summer Science Exhibition

For over three decades the Royal Society has opened the doors to its building in central London and welcomed thousands of visitors to meet the researchers behind some of the leading science in the UK. As the oldest science festival in the UK, the Summer Science Exhibition is a member of the UK Science Festival Network.

Up to 500 researchers from across the country take part, talking to visitors about their work and demonstrating the scientific principles and discoveries with hands-on interactives and talks. As the UK’s national academy of science, the Royal Society is committed to demonstrating the importance of science to everyone, and the Summer Science Exhibition is our flagship public engagement event.

Its history dates back to 1778, when the President at the time, Joseph Banks, started ‘conversaziones’ (later known as the Soirees). An opportunity for Fellows of the Royal Society to show their latest research and breakthroughs, they have since developed into the annual public Summer Science Exhibition.

After two years of online activities, this year's Summer Science Exhibition will run again in person at Carlton House Terrace.
