I have set up the Institute for Research in Schools. This is a new Charitable Trust with Trustees including Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Kent. This will empower young people and their teachers to take part in authentic research. The Institute for Research in Schools is starting to support teachers, students, Universities and Industry in developing large scale genuine research opportunities for young people. My students have put an experiment on a satellite which is giving us such good data that even NASA wants the data.
I have been lucky with the support I have had. My school was very flexible when my daughter was young so that I could teach straight through and have a lunch break at the end of the day so I could pick up my daughter from primary school. As my daughter has grown up my husband has been around a lot. Caitie has a very demanding schedule sailing all over the country and also in Europe. I spend many a weekend marking books by the side of reservoirs and the sea! It’s been hard work but I’m the luckiest to have a wonderful daughter and a fascinating career.
