My main research area is in lysosomal storage diseases, particularly those involving glycosphingolipid storage. In particular, we are developing new therapies based on a greater understanding of pathogenesi.
Work-life balance is never easy, but four factors made it all possible for me. Firstly, my extremely supportive husband Nick. He is also a scientist, so understands all the pressures and demands in my working life. He has tirelessly looked after the twins when I have been away at conferences/meetings. Secondly, we were very lucky to have a great childminder come to our house for many years when the children were small, which meant we could leave them without worries. Julie, if you ever read this, you were a star! Thirdly, my lab has always accommodated with great patience my less than predictable work patterns. Finally, Issi and Joe put up with their mum travelling a lot when they were growing up and it has been great to have them join me on a several trips over the years.
