I combine biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics in studies of gene expression. After developing an efficient gene cloning system for yeast cells, I became interested in the mechanism and regulation of RNA splicing in yeast. More recently we discovered an unexpected link between splicing and transcription and we now study how and why these two cellular processes are functionally coupled.
I was very fortunate to have had several fellowships that allowed me to focus on research, and which saved my career after I resigned a lectureship in London to return to Edinburgh with my husband. He has been extremely supportive of my career and family life, which was vital to me. We married quite young but did not start a family until I had established my own research group. We also believe in having good support at home; we had a nanny or au pair when the boys were young and we still employ domestic help.
