Doctoral students’ career expectations: principles and responsibilities

This project explores doctoral students' careers expectations, and how they can be best managed so that students and their supervisors understand the wide range of careers that a PhD can lead to in and outside of science.

A set of principles and responsibilities for students, supervisory teams, careers and training services and HEIs, were published in December 2014.

These overarching principles and responsibilities should be adopted to help ensure that PhD students’ career expectations are clearly understood by all concerned and effectively managed.

They were developed following engagement with stakeholders in a series of roundtable discussions.

Universities are encouraged to use the principles and responsibilities as a basis for building on existing careers, information and guidance practice.
