S&T Committee (Commons): Strategic science provision in English universities

01 January 2005

The Society submitted the following evidence to the House of Commons Science & Technology Committee inquiry into strategic science provision in English universities. The submission built on the Societys earlier policy work on the development of higher education, and identified the following as key issues to be addressed by the inquiry:

  • better coordination of education policy for the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors;
  • building capacity in the science teaching profession; and
  • the development of the UK undergraduate degree system to meet Britains needs during the next few decades as it strives to become a major knowledge-based economy.

The submission also outlined the Societys ongoing and future policy work in this area, and its various projects and schemes that support teaching and learning in schools and colleges, and foster high-quality academic research careers among excellent individuals.
