Statement on demographic change in Europe

11 June 2014

The Royal Society is one of eight academies which have signed a European Science Academies’ statement on demographic change in Europe.

The statement highlights how the population in Europe is currently changing, in both numbers and composition, and the policy challenges this presents. A number of recommendations are proposed, including the need to reduce material consumption whilst promoting high quality education, health and living conditions across the whole of the European Union. These recommendations complement the Society’s report People and the Planet.
