Consultation Response: Migration Advisory Committee’s Call for Evidence on minimum salary thresholds for Tier 2

03 July 2015

The Government has commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee to review the minimum salary thresholds for the Tier 2 (General) visa route. This is the main route used by UK institutions to recruit non-EEA science and research professionals to the UK.

In this letter, the Society emphasises the value of non-EU scientists to the UK and the importance of maintaining the ability of UK institutions to recruit them. The Society cautions that increasing the minimum salary thresholds for Tier 2 could be detrimental to the UK, noting that pay is not a good proxy for the value of scientists to the UK.
