Tata Group

Founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, the Tata group is a global enterprise, headquartered in India, comprising 30 companies across ten verticals. The group operates in more than 100 countries across six continents, with a mission 'To improve the quality of life of the communities we serve globally, through long-term stakeholder value creation based on Leadership with Trust'. Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies. Sixty-six percent of the equity share capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic trusts, which support education, health, livelihood generation and art and culture.

These companies collectively employ over 720,000 people. Each Tata company or enterprise operates independently under the guidance and supervision of its own board of directors and shareholders. There are 28 publicly listed Tata enterprises. Tata companies with significant scale include Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals, Tata Consumer Products, Titan, Tata Capital, Tata Power, Tata Advanced Systems, Indian Hotels, and Tata Communications.

Currently supporting: the Royal Society Tata Programme for the Physical Sciences and Engineering

In 2016 the Royal Society and the Tata Group announced the Royal Society Tata University Research Fellows, an agreement which would enhance the Royal Society’s current University Research Fellowship (URF) programme with an additional nine Fellows being funded. This support will give early career research scientists working in the fields of physical sciences and engineering who have the potential to become leaders in their respective fields, the opportunity to build an independent research career. The programme reflects the Royal Society’s commitments to recognising excellence in science and supporting outstanding science, and the Tata Group’s aims to enrich and empower individuals to encourage success.

Additionally, as part of their support, the Tata Group are funding an annual Meeting of Minds conference. This provides networking opportunities for the Society’s research fellows, including Tata URFs, in order to encourage collaboration and engagement across all scientific disciplines.
