STEM Research career roadmap

The roadmap has been designed to support current and prospective researchers explore academic career pathways in STEM research.

The Royal Society STEM Research career roadmap provides a comprehensive summary of roles in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research sector and has been designed to support current and prospective researchers to explore the range of careers available.

The roadmap has been developed to make career trajectories in STEM research more transparent by highlighting pathways into, between and through research career stages and sectors. The Society is working to address known gaps in information available on STEM careers and empower everyone with the knowledge to pursue a role in research.

The STEM Research career roadmap provides an opportunity to:

  • Explore STEM career pathways and discover which roles are right for you
  • Discover the vast opportunities to transition between different career stages and sectors
  • Gain insight into role expectations, qualifications and skills required for specific roles, and even where it can lead you next
  • Connect with the real-world stories of individuals currently shaping fields from medical genomics to particle physics
  • Access additional resources aimed at supporting prospective researchers from under-represented groups, including scientists with disabilities, scientists from minority ethnic backgrounds, women in STEM and LGBTQ+ scientists

Why is this important?

A crucial part of the Royal Society’s strategy is to identify and address barriers to participation in STEM and highlight inspirational and relatable role models from underrepresented groups. By providing open access to information about career pathways, the website fills a known information gap for current and prospective researchers, including those from underrepresented groups who otherwise may not have access to this information.

How was the roadmap developed?

The website was researched and developed in partnership with the Careers Research and Advisory Centre (CRAC) and will be reviewed bi-annually to ensure that the resource is kept up to date.

Many thanks to all STEM professionals who are featured in the case study section of the website. We are continually building our catalogue of case studies to ensure they are representative of all scientists. If you are interested in being featured as a case study in our STEM Research career roadmap, email diversity@royalsociety.org.
